J.D. Hastings was born in Redondo Beach, California in 1976 to Gary and Diane Hastings (and sister, Laura). From an early age his parents encouraged him to draw. This was mostly wasted effort until Hastings was introduced to comics, from which he taught himself much of what he knows about drawing today.
After High School, Hastings leisurely attended the University of California at Berkeley. While he did take some art classes, he ultimately graduated with a degree in English in 1999.
Since that time, he has worked as a legal assistant in San Francisco while devoting most of his free time and money to art. Over the years, he has worked to develop his idiosyncratic style in paint, as well as the occasional dalliance with his first love drawing.
